Statutory Changes - December 2007
With effect from 1st October 2007 the national minimum wage and the
minimum holiday entitlement increased.
National minimum wage:
- The adult rate (age 22 and over) of £5.35 increases to £5.52
- The 18-21 year rate of £4.45 increased to £4.60
- The 16-17 year rate of £3.30 increased to £3.40
Minimum holiday entitlement:
Minimum holiday entitlement increased from 20 days to 24 days, inclusive
of bank holidays, this is the first step with respect to increasing it
to 28 days, which is scheduled for 1st April 2009.
St. Andrews Day
Scotland is to get a ninth bank holiday-St Andrews Day. The new bank
holiday will come into effect on 30th November 2007.
The St Andrew's Day bill does not give an automatic right to an additional
day's holiday; it seeks to improve the celebrations of St. Andrew's Day.
Employers are not obliged to pay an employee if they take the day off.
However, the employee is entitled to substitute the benefit from one
of their other standard bank holidays instead.
