Tax repayment scams - Dec 2009

We are being made increasingly aware of scams and frauds involving tax refunds and a taxpayer's right to the tax repayment due to them.

There are phishing emails in circulation which purport to come from H.M. Revenue and Customs and offer bogus refunds if the recipient provides personal information. Should you receive an email of this nature, please delete immediately.

H.M. Revenue and Customs emphasises that it only ever contacts taxpayers who are due a refund in writing by post. It never requests information or informs a taxpayer by email or telephone calls.

If you submit your own tax returns electronically please keep your login details and passwords safe to avoid these falling into the wrong hands.
